CPBC 34th Anniversary Gala & Awards Night- Celebrates ongoing growth in bilateral Trade and Relations

 

The Canada Pakistan Business Council (CPBC) celebrated its 34th Anniversary Gala on May 23rd, 2017 and honoured distinguished individuals who have contributed in their respective fields of specialization through excellence awards. Maintaining its traditions, the CPBC event was attended by a cross section of people including dignitaries, prominent business and community leaders, members of academia, and other distinguished guests. The well-attended Gala was graced by several hundred people representing the business community and the Pakistani diaspora. This year CPBC partnered with and welcomed a high-powered ICT (Information Communication Technology) delegation from Pakistan headed by Mr. Aamer Khanzada of Pegasus Consulting. The visit was inspired by the ICT Forum through the joint initiative last year of the Consulate General, Ministry of International Trade and CPBC, thereby creating an additional opportunity to connect Canada and Pakistan, and to bring together each others excellence and diverse strengths in a manner that enhances collaboration in this sector.

Dr. Reza Moridi – Minister for Research, Innovation, and Science – was the Guest of Honour. In his keynote speech, Dr. Moridi, who holds a Ph.D. in Physics, acknowledged the contributions of Nobel Prize winners from Pakistan and conveyed a message of support for greater collaboration between Canada and Pakistan in the fields of science and technology.IMG_1840

Premier of Ontario, Kathleen Wynne, unable to attend the event, sent a heartfelt message in which she appreciated the efforts made by CPBC and its role in enhancing the importance of cultivating pleasant and constructive relations between the two countries.

Mr. Samir Dossal, President CPBC, expressed his gratitude to all those who sponsored and volunteered for the event and spelled out his vision of exploring new business opportunities and expanding CPBC’s prospects. He also expressed strong support for the platform named CPBC NexGen that has been created for the next generation of young and ambitious community members so that they may expand the existing horizons in developing leadership in various fields, including trade, research, and development.

Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance; highlighting the increased engagement with Pakistan reference the visit of MP Omar Alghabra Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Consular Affairs) to Pakistan. Dr. Donald Bobaish, Assistant Deputy Minister (Asia Pacific), Global Affairs Canada was amongst our honoured guests. Dr. Bobaish has served at the High Commission of Canada in Pakistan and has recently relaunched the Pakistan-Canada joint working group on trade and investment. He has underscored the importance of a mutually symbiotic bilateral relationship to promote commercial and cultural avenues. Dr. Bobaish is also a strong proponent of propagating Pakistan-Canada collaboration through trade and investment and has appreciated CPBP’s exceptional efforts in facilitating bilateral ties between the two countries.IMG_1787

Mr. Fahim Hamid Ali was awarded the ‘CPBC Excellence Award for Arts & Culture 2017’. A self-taught artist, Mr. Ali’s work ranges from People, Wild Life, Landscapes, and historic events. He is highly passionate about the Islamic Calligraphy and Egyptian and Hindu Mythologies. This diversity has enabled him to carve a niche for himself in the art world as a versatile artist who is at home with various subjects and mediums. His work has been exhibited all over the world and he was part of the Aga Khan Museum’s inaugural exhibition.

MAPLE MORNING: The experience of celebrating the Pakistani Diaspora has been extremely rewarding on a personal level for Fahim.Directing and producing MAPLE MORNING has been a great learning experience and has given Fahim the unique chance of understanding of so many dynamic personalities over the course of this project with an insight into the fabric of our society in Canada.

The project was initiated by the Consulate General of Pakistan with the personal intervention of former Consul General of Pakistan Asghar Ali Golo (now Ambassador) in consultation with Canada Pakistan Business Council and its President Samir Dossal not too long back.  CPBC 2017 Entrepnueuer of the Year, Mr. Shakir Rehmatullah President Flato Developments Inc stepped up to be the Honorary Patron for this unique first time ever initiative.

The humble beginning has now evolved to be a project of magnitude with the sequel in progress MAPLE MORNING—-The Journey Continues……This will upcoming production is being  supported by one of CPBC Sponsors. With the support from the entire community, it is going to make it bigger & better.

He also has the honour of having his original painting on Tipu Sultan, a Freedom Movement Hero of the Subcontinent, acquired by the National Museum of Pakistan for permanent display at their Freedom Movement Gallery. He also has had the has had the honour of painting Prince Karim Aga Khan’s first ever portrait on glass.

Mr. Ali is of the opinion that his art is representational by choice and if the art of painting is to survive, it must describe and express people and nature; it must communicate.

CPBC continues its ongoing interactions with Sindh Board of Investment to see how CPBC can support in promoting various sectors to achieve bilateral interests. SBI has strong conviction in the future of Sindh as an economic and energy hub of the region. In this regard, SBI has been successfully inked a number of MoU`s with a number of foreign investors to invest in different sectors of Sindh.

ACHIEVEMENTS OF SBI IN LAST THREE YEARS.

Education City:

Sindh Education City (EC) project is one of the top most priority projects of the  Government of Sindh. The EC is comprised of 8,900 acres in Gaddap town. Twenty local and foreign institutions have been allocated land to develop their academic campuses and some have completed their detailed design to commence construction of their campuses. The Master Plan of EC has been completed and approved by EC  board headed by Honourable Chief Minister Sindh and has been placed within the Karachi City Master Plan. Spatial and administrative governance structure has been setup by the provincial assembly via the Sindh Education City Act 2012. Infrastructure development has begun. The construction of administration enclave is in progress. The detailed Rules & Regulation of EC Act 2013 are being prepared by a renowned law firm, besides Bye-Laws of construction by educational institutes in EC are under preparation.

Marble City

SBI has initiated the Marble City Project in Karachi that has tremendous investment and growth potential for the entrepreneurs based on high-end industrial knowledge, innovation, and services.  Marble City is planned over 300 acres of land along the Northern bypass. The land has been procured whereas Company with the name of Sindh Stone Development Company (SSDC) is formed under Article 42 of companies            Ordinance for independent, efficient and effective execution of the Project. Topographical Survey and Lease Execution is in progress whereas Boundary Wall is to be constructed after completion of the topographical survey.

Special Economic Zones

Keeping in view the great success of SEZs around the world, the Government of   Pakistan has passed Special Economic Zone Act, 2012. According to the Act, the supervisory for special economic zones shall be respective boards of investment in the provinces. Sindh Board of Investment is the supervisory authority for Special Economic Zones in Sindh. It is pertinent to mention that only three zones have been granted the status of Special Economic Zone by GOP and all of them belongs to Sindh which are following:

  • Khairpur Special Economic Zone
  • Bin Qasim Industrial Park
  • Korangi Creek Industrial Park

 

Entrepreneurship Development Programme

SBI signed MoU with Sukkur IBA and IBA Karachi to launch the Entrepreneurship Development Program (EDP) for the promotion of Agriculture in collaboration with the Institute of Business Administration, Karachi (IBA Karachi) and the Sukkur Institute of Business Administration (Sukkur IBA). The project was initiated as a pilot project with an aim to train 300 students. The program was aimed at designing and conducting a program on entrepreneurship along with hands-on training in order to prepare the rural youth of Sindh to develop their capacity to pursue agriculture business in their province.  The pilot project of Entrepreneurship Development has been successfully completed during 2013-14 and shown positive impact on the community. People are getting aware of entrepreneurship and its importance, while a number of businesses and start-ups also increasing.

Our massive marketing and vigorous pursuance has caused to land a number of investors to invest in Thar Coar blocks, Coal power plants, Wind, Solar & Run of River and attracted billions of dollars investment in the province. The ‘CPBC Business Excellence Award 2017’ was awarded to Mr. Shakir Rehmatullah, President, and Founder of Flato Developments Inc. Mr. Rehmatullah is a community builder across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and has studied architectural engineering from the University of Miami. Shortly after graduating, he moved to Canada with his family and began working in the construction industry. After several years of working in the construction field, Shakir started Flato Developments Inc.IMG_3838

Under the leadership of Mr. Rehmatullah, Flato Developments was awarded the Markham Building Excellence Award in 2011. The award is presented annually to new home builders that demonstrate compliance with the Building Code regulations, the Building Code Act, and conduct exemplary site administration.

Mr. Rehmatullah is a well-known figure for his philanthropic initiatives and is a regular contributor to hospitals, charities, and recreational organizations, including the Markham Stouffville Hospital, Stevenson Memorial Hospital, Matthews House Hospice, as well as local non-profit organizations, sports teams, and more. Recently, he announced the FLATO sponsorship program that will offer two scholarships every year, in each community where he builds his projects. One scholarship will benefit a student in the construction field and the other will be awarded to a student enrolled in an arts program.

The significance of the arts in the community is also close to Shakir’s heart, and he has partnered with and continues to support the Flato Markham Theatre and the Varley Art Gallery.
A major corporate sponsor and official custodian of the Flato Markham Theatre, Flato’s naming agreement with the City of Markham’s Theatre is the first corporation to have formed such a partnership in Markham’s history. In addition to extending the naming agreement for 20 years, Shakir was also recently recognized as the First Honorary Patron of the Flato Markham Theatre for his long-standing support since 2010.IMG_1318

CPBC Celebrates its 34th Anniversary Gala and honours Excellence Awards to prominent individuals who have contributed in their respective fields of specialization. Maintaining its traditions CPBC event was attended by a cross section of people representing dignitaries, prominent business, and community leaders. Of course, as always large contingent from the business community, Pakistani diaspora, and distinguished guest. This year CPBC partnered and welcomed a high-powered ICT Delegation, in collaboration with the Trade Branch of the Ministry of International Trade, thus creating an opportunity to connect Canada and Pakistan to bring together each other’s excellence and diverse strengths to enhance collaborations in this sector. To support this Dr. Reza Moridi, Minister of Research, Innovation, and Science, Government of Ontario was the Guest of Honor and the keynote speaker.Zeeshan Ali_001

The event witnessed ‘CPBC Professional Excellence Award 2017 – Male’ awarded to Mr. Zeeshan Ali. Mr. Ali is presently serving as the Canadian Vice President for the digital transformation technologies at Salesforce Canada. Taking charge of his current office in March 2015, Mr. Ali enjoys Canada-wide responsibilities for Salesforce’s products portfolio, with a focus around financial services, tele-communication and retail verticals. His professional carrer with Salesforce spans for around 9 years. Previously, Mr. Ali held various positions with technology giants like Oracle Corporation and BEA Systems.IMG_3860

Mr. Ali moved to Canada in 2000, before which, he worked for a decade with Time Life, where he held a variety of management, operations, sales, and marketing roles. He ultimately acquired the distribution rights for Time Life in Pakistan and is also serving as the company’s chief executive officer and president and leading a successful effort to streamline operations, strengthen the product line, and drive growth.

Mr. Ali is highly passionate about causes that promote literacy and education in Pakistan and also is very active in career coaching and job mentoring new immigrants to Canada.

This year, the ‘CPBC Professional Excellence Award (2017) – Female’ was presented to Dr. Wendy Cukier. One of Canada’s leading experts on disruptive technologies, innovation processes, and diversity, Dr. Cukier has written extensively disruptive technology and social innovation. With more than 200 publications on technology, innovation, and management she has received more than $10 million in research funding over the last decade. Dr. Cukier is also the coauthor of the bestseller “Innovation Nation: Canadian Leadership from Java to Jurassic Park.”

She holds an MA and MBA from the University of Toronto, and a Ph.D. from the Schulich School of Business, York University. She also has an honorary doctorate from Laval University in and Concordia University.

Dr. Cukier serves on a host of boards in the private and non-profit sectors and has helped create and grow several successful startups and social ventures including Flybits, Think2Thing and Growing North that was recently selected among the top 10 finalists from 900 applicants for the Google.org ‘Impact Challenge’.

In 1999, she became the founding Director of the Diversity Institute of Ryerson University that led evidence-based projects to advance diversity and inclusion. As a Director, she worked with more than 40 organizations, spearheading large-scale projects such as DiversityLeads.

As Vice-President of Research and Innovation at Ryerson University (2011 – 2016). She transformed her unit and promoted innovation and commercialization. Under her leadership, research and partnerships expanded, driving an increase in external funding by more than 60%. She built partnerships with other academic institutions, businesses, community groups and governments around the world. She was a founder of Lifeline Syria at Ryerson University, which raised $4.7 million and mobilized 1000 volunteers to sponsor and resettle more than 400 Syrian refugees working with leading businesses such as Starbucks and entrepreneurs like Mohamad Fakih and Sajjad Ebrahim.

Her work has been widely recognized for its impact on the lives of Canadians. Dr. Cukier is a recipient of numerous awards, including the Governor General’s Meritorious Cross, one of Canada’s highest civilian honours. She was also named one of the University of Toronto’s 100 Alumni ‘Who Shaped the Century’, was selected as one of Canada’s Top 25 Women of Influence (in 2013) and selected as one of 25 Transformational Canadians by The Globe and Mail, La Presse and CTV (in 2010). More recently, she received the Black Business Professional Association’s Harry Jerome Diversity Award, and in November of 2016, became a Fellow of the Canadian Geographic Society.
